Tulip 1 by Katie Asplin

Tulips are one of the most recognisable and well-loved flowers in the world. While most people think of the Netherlands when they think of tulips, they are actually native to the mountains of central Asia. Today, there are more than 6000 cultivars of tulips in all different colours and shapes.

In the 17th Century, “tulip mania” hit the Netherlands, with one tulip bulb reportedly worth more than a horse and carriage or a house! While they are not quite so expensive these days, tulip mania is certainly an annual occurrence in Canberra, with tulips dominating the display of more than one million blooms on show at the famous Floriade festival each year.
